It's time for the Apple Watch to support Android

The smartwatch race should be over. Apple should have won, but that hasn't exactly been the case. While the Cupertino company remains the leading smartwatch maker, shipments of the Apple Watch have fallen and its market share is slowly diminishing due to increased competition from SamsungGarmin and traditional watchmakers such as Fossil.
Apple's market share could be further disrupted following the release of Android Wear 2.0. The updated operating system is expected to be released in early February alongside two watches built in a collaboration between LG and Google. Android Wear 2.0 will also add features, such as an on-watch app store, that help make watches less reliant on phones and more compatible with iPhones.
The Apple Watch may be the most popular smartwatch, but it's not the best option for everyone. It only works with the iPhone. Meanwhile, many fitness trackers work across Android and iOS. To change this trend and truly dominate the market, Apple should bring the Watch to Android.
As a long-time Android user and someone who has personally tested dozens of smartwatches, I would wear the Apple Watch if it didn't mean switching to an iPhone. It's a great device, but I prefer the deep integration with Google services on my Android phone.
Adding Android support to the Apple Watch could be the final nail in the coffins of Android Wear and Tizen, Samsung's watch operating system. It may also help convert some Apple skeptics to buy other Apple products. Win-win.

Flexibility is key

Apple should follow in the footsteps of Fitbit and Garmin, both of which offer devices that work cross-platform. The Apple Watch remains locked into iOS and an iOS-only fitness hub. If fitness is the Apple Watch's best feature, then Android, at the very least, needs an iOS Activity and Workout app. Or it needs to be able to work with Google Health. Option A obviously makes more sense.
While fitness trackers never seem to have a problem working cross-platform, the experience with smartwatches hasn't always been a great one. Android Wear on iOS doesn't work as well as it does on Android phones (although this may change with Android Wear 2.0), and Samsung's iOS Gear app suffers the same way.
But even with a limited set of basic features, an Apple Watch on Android would be a compelling buy. It would be enough for me -- and possibly for others.

Consider the iPod

You might think this is absurd, but consider the iPod. Apple eventually brought iTunes to Windows, a move many thought would never happen, and it's the reason the iPod became a smash hit. The same can be said about the iPhone. Sales exploded when the phone's US availability expanded beyond AT&T.
Apple is now the world's most valuable company, but Wall Street analysts and critics are raising questions about the company's future. How much longer can it rely on the iPhone?
If Apple wants to win the smartwatch race, it needs to swallow its pride and embrace Android. Or, at the very least, let the Apple Watch become its own iPhone-free accessory.
Does the Mac still matter? Apple execs tell why the MacBook Pro was over four years in the making, and why we should care.

JAZZ Consolidates its Franchise Network
Posted by : Muhammad Ashfaq Blog Admin
Jazz announced today that it is consolidating the Jazz and Warid franchise network as part of the integration process, following its merger with WARID. From today, over 51 million customers will be served by a combined support network of more than 400 franchises across the country.
“All franchises will now operate as combined franchisees. In business terms, this means being leaner and more efficient, and more digitally savvy,” said Aamir Ibrahim, the CEO of JAZZ. “This significantly increases access to JAZZ franchises across Pakistan especially in remote areas,” he added.
The consolidation process has resulted in the closure of around a third of the total franchises from both JAZZ and WARID. A support programme has been developed for those no longer part of the Jazz Franchise network.
Franchise integration will offer an excellent service to customers and safeguard the long-term growth of franchises, partners, employees and Jazz itself.
Warid Customers can also use Jazz Scratch cards and Jazz Load to recharge their balance and avail the complete JAZZ experience through a network of over 400 franchises. Existing Jazz customers will benefit from theenlarged Franchise network – giving them even greater access to the services they enjoy.

Slow Video Streaming Issue In Pakistan May Soon Be History
Posted by : Azam Jatt   IT Consultant

Consider this. You’re casually browsing when a friend sends you a link to a video. You open it and it’s slow to load, reminding you of horrible days when modems used to make unholy sounds when connecting to the internet. Browsing seems fine, download speeds too but for some reason, the videos take too much time to load.
If this has happened to you, you aren’t alone.
Local Internet Service Providers or ISPs get these kind of complaints regularly where despite getting the advertised speed for an internet connection, the user’s videos won’t stream. The issue isn’t just limited to Facebook or Twitter, others encounter this problem with other video streaming sites as well.
It makes sense to blame the ISP or your internet if the video isn’t streaming, right? Not quite.
The real problem lies with the streaming provider or social media websites’ respective CDNs.

What Is A CDN? How Is It At Fault?

A CDN or Content Delivery Network is a system of distributed servers (the network) which deliver webpages and other content on a website to the end user. The CDNs are placed by content providers including social media giants, broadcasting and over the top TV companies etc. at various geographical locations depending on the number of users in that area or the amount of data used in that area.
The problem is that social media networks and video sharing platforms like Facebook, Google and YouTube do not have adequate CDNs in Pakistan.
This means that Pakistani users have to access that data from another country or region’s CDN, most probably from Singapore or in Europe in majority of cases when accessing these websites from Pakistan.
These CDNs, which are already handling the data in their respective regions can get overloaded as it is designed with a specific volume of data in mind and is incapable of handling more data resulting in those endless video buffering and low quality videos you see on YouTube, Facebook and other sites.
Importantly, accessing the CDNs in another country will carry higher delay than if the CDN is placed in Pakistan. With video delivery (which most commonly uses adaptive bit rate streaming) this usually also means a longer time to load the video, more time buffering and also significantly more time before the stream quality improves: most videos start at Standard Definition (SD) quality and then gradually increase to HD as the client senses more bandwidth is available.
[Hint: if your Netflix video stream quality is poor, you can try stopping and starting the stream again (using either pause then unpause or rewind several seconds and then play) and then wait 30 seconds to a minute for the quality to improve. This delay and ramp up to a higher quality stream is caused by the latency in reaching the far-end streaming server].

How Storm Fiber Is Going To Fix This

StormFiber, a local ISP, has stepped up to resolve this issue by working closely with social media giants as well as YouTube and Netflix to place their respective CDNs in Pakistan.
Some of these giants such as YouTube have already placed their CDNs and are constantly increasing their capacity as StormFiber’s traffic grows. In addition companies such as Akamai (the world’s largest CDN provider) are also in the process of placing their infrastructure with Stormfiber. This will fix the problem of overloading other CDNs and dramatically reduce the latency users experience when loading streams and improve the experience of viewing HD and 4K streams.
These steps by StormFiber will enable Pakistani users to have content delivery network with-in our own country and ultimately better video quality without any buffering or delay.
Cyber Crime Case In Pakistan: FIA Arrests Man Accused of Blackmailing On WhatsApp

Posted by : Jamil Ahmad Senior IT Editor

Increasing mobile and internet penetration in Pakistan has brought with it a spate of cyber crimes. The recently Cyber Crime Bill empowers the FIA to take action in such cases.
Recently, a man used WhatsApp to blackmail and threaten his victim into paying a large sum of money.
Muhammad Saleem, a mobile phone repairman at Hanzala Communications in Javeria Mobile City, Model Colony Karachi was arrested for blackmailing the victim using WhatsApp.
Muhammad Saleem
He sent personal videos of objectionable nature on WhatsApp to the victim, asking them to pay Rs. 50,000 or he would upload these videos to websites of explicit nature.
For the purpose of blackmail and evading capture, Saleem used a number which was registered to a woman.

Case Details

According to the case details, Mr. Zahid* visited the mobile repair shop to get his phone repaired. After the phone was fixed he asked Saleem to sell the phone. When Saleem sold the phone he found a memory card in it which contained objectionable videos of Mr. Zahid’s* sister.
He got greedy and used his customers’ phones which were sent him for repairs with a SIM that was registered to a woman to blackmail Mr. Zahid*.
He proceeded to send Mr. Zahid* videos of his sister on WhatsApp and demanded Rs. 50,000 to delete the videos, else he would upload them to objectionable websites.
The victim had agreed to pay the sum to Saleem and were going to meet at a restaurant in Karachi. The victim called FIA’s cyber crime cell and they sent a raiding party to the restaurant as well.
When Saleem got there, the information regarding the objectionable videos was confirmed and he was arrested.

Punishment Details

He will be charged under section 16, 21 and 24 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016. The actual punishment details were not revealed.

Zong Updates Going to Updates it's MBB plans

Posted by : Sajid Ali  Ops Administrator

Zong is in process of revising its mobile broadband packages and prices for at least four plans have been increased at the rate of 1 paisa per MB.
According to an advertisement published in papers, four Zong Mobile Broadband 3G and 4G packages are being revised.
It must be mentioned that the usual Zong packages will remain the same but only the below mentioned MBB packages (that come with dongles or MiFis) are being revised.
This move from Zong is a sign that telecom operators are now going to rationalize their prices. Zong, that was previously conceived as an aggressive operator, has taken the lead in right-pricing data bundles, a move that other operators are going to follow very soon.
While customers might not like the package revisions, competing operators will be very relieved as everyone had to do this one day (exactly like we had previously hinted).
Not to mention, Zong is putting a special focus on the 4G market where it has grabbed more than 2 million customers already. Zong also said that it will invest heavily in 4G network during 2017 to make sure that its high-speed broadband is stretched across the country.
Zong already has more than 6,000 4G cell sites and their number is likely to grow substantially during the next 12 months.
Revised Zong MBB Packages include:

Fighting ad of Zong for Jazz

Posted by : Gul Nawaz ( IT Expert )
Zong has Jazz in its crosshairs and the issue at hand is data speeds. The company behind Pakistan’s largest 4G network released an advert targeting Jazz and called them out for low internet speeds.
Titled “Ride the Right Network”, the ad depicts Zong as the green Ferrari on the left and Jazz as the red Foxy on the right.
Observers can quickly spot what’s the real message and intent behind the ad.
As evident from the number plate of the Foxy, JZ3G is a reference to Jazz 3G. Jazz offered 3G before the merger with Warid under the Jazz 3G so the call out is an obvious one.
Not to mention the red color, which is the same as Jazz’s original color, leaves little to the imagination as well,
3G, 4G user Increases in Pakistan

Posted by : Hussain Masood    IT Department
The number of 3G and 4G users in Pakistan reached 37.57 million by end of December 2016 against 36.41 million by end of November, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) report revealed on Tuesday.
The data shows that the number of 3G/4G subscribers increased in the country from 29 million in 2015-2016 to 37 million by end of December i.e. 8 million in last six months.
Number of mobile phone users in Pakistan reached 136.49 million by end of December 2016 from 135.87 million by end of November, and registered an increase of around 0.62 million during the period under review.
According to the PTA report, the number of 3G users of Mobilink, Zong and Telenor reached 12.326 million, 7.134 million and 9.897 million by end of December 2016 as compared to 12.148 million, 6.824 million and 9.504 million by end of November respectively.

Pakistan is yet again making efforts to develop and deploy a system to block smartphones that are stolen or lost.
Last time a similar attempt was made in 2008/09 under the chairmanship of Dr. Yasin. However, it failed due the fact that the system back then used only IMEI numbers for blocking a phone. Since IMEI numbers can be changed easily (through software) the system didn’t work and it failed even before deployment.
This time law-enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies, mobile phone companies and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority gathered again to figure out if its possible to develop a computer system to disable phones that are stolen or lost.
A local company has already been contracted for the purpose that’s soon going to deliver the solution to PTA.
Here’s how the new system for blocking lost/stolen phones will work:
  • PTA will maintain a list of allowed IMEIs (imported legally, PTA approved IMEIs, IMEIs paired with CNICs etc.) to be allowed to register with local networks.
  • All phone owners will be asked to register IMEI numbers with their SIM card (and ultimately a CNIC number, since SIMs are mapped with CNICs)
  • When a phone is stolen or lost, it will be put in blocked list
  • In case if IMEI is in blocked list or if IMEI isn’t matching the registered SIM card number, it won’t be allowed to connect with any network.
A statement was also issued regarding the new software used for this system:
Once the software is ready, with the insertion of SIM card, the said mobile phone’s IMEI number will be registered. In case of theft or loss, when the subscriber will block the SIM, the mobile phone will also be blocked automatically.
This is going to make phone stealing useless as stolen phones won’t be able to connect to any network and will ultimately result in a better situation relating to phone snatching and other related crimes.
No word yet on when the system is expected to be deployed.
